Description

The Victor Easy Set Gopher Trap is ideal for trapping gophers that can cause massive damage to the yard. This trap features a narrow design, which is ideal to place directly into gopher tunnels. The Easy Set traps come fully assembled and ready for use. Some traps are not ideal for all soil types, although the Easy Set trap is! Use in clay, sand, and normal soils and know that any of the traps moving parts are secured underground when in use. To use the traps simply set and cover with dirt or place in a gopher mound. Most effective in spring and fall, these traps can help to stop breeding populations. The galvanized steel construction provides durability and a long-lasting future for trapping gophers that invade the yard.

we had a horrible gopher problem due to vegetable garden . tried dropping poison, that didn''t seem to work. still new mounds everywhere.

tried those solar sonic repellents. read the instructions bought 4 units to cover entire backyard, these repellents didn''t seem to bother them. they just didn''t go near them. kept about 6 to 10 feet away from them and kept tearing up the yard.

tried smoke bombs. that just showed how many tunnels they''ve made thru the yard and it was extensive. there were so many holes that we had to patch up / cover so the smoke would work. kept at it for weeks. it would drive them out of the yard for a couple of days. then when we stopped smoking the holes they would return.

tried flooding them, that didn''t work. there were just too many tunnels and it just didn''t seem to flood them. and yes we had the water on for a long time. almost 1 hour, the whole back yard was muddy.

finally, tried trapping and this really worked for us. we just found a fresh mound, dug around a little bit, opening up the hole just a bit to set the trap, no bait. just cover the hole with trap with some dead grass and sometimes same day or the next we''d catch one. we caught total of 6 gophers over the next month. we still set the traps in the old holes but haven''t see any new gopher mounds since the 6th catch. looks like they''re all gone for now.. i also used the sweeny''s traps. they look exactly like these ones but coated in green paint. although almost exactly the same it was a bit smaller and it would catch the gopher. the victor trap worked the best for us as it was slightly bigger with a bigger trap opening to catch the gopher.

what i also liked about this trap than the many other traps out there. you dont have to dig a big hole or dig a hole and level the trap to the ground. this required no digging. it just required you to make sure the gopher hole was big enough for the trap which it usually is. just need to dig away the closed off mound. there''s a bunch of youtube videos on how to use these traps effectively and it really helped.

I''ve ordered 4 batches of these from amazon in the past and I would have given them 5 stars, however the 2 2-packs I just ordered look to have changed in manufacturing process - previous ones I''ve bought the trigger plate is completely flat - the new ones are bent and still have curvature (shiny part in the photo). 3 of four of them will not set, they automatically trigger and the 4th likely will snap just from sitting for a short time. (yes, I know how to set them properly, I''ve caught 400+ gophers with them so far and have used them enough to have to bend them back to shape with pliers to get them to work).

However, a quick fix for the issue rather than wasting everyones time returning them, is simply take some sandpaper to the top of the bars that engage the trigger plate - this creates enough friction for them to function properly. Great product, but VERY lacking in quality control in the current batch that''s shipping out (arrived 10 Feb 2020).

Ok so I have a big gopher problem in my lawn and finally decided to get some traps. After countless hours of researching and watching videos I decided to go with 2 different brands. This and another that I can''t say thinking this review would get removed. Please feel free to message me (I dont even know if there is a way to do that) the other trap I got. Cost wise the Victor set was about half the price as the competitor. Its weird they used to sell the other brand on Amazon, but now they don''t. Setup wise the competitor wins hands down. You set it and wind the spring and set in place. The snap you get when the trigger goes off is really strong. The Victor was a bit hard to set for me. Kept going off when I was trying to carefully place them in the holes. When the trap went off it wasnt as powerful as the competitor which was a real minus. The gopher might not die so easily and you have a better chance of it pulling the trap further in the hole. So now the test... Im 0 for 4 on this set and 3/4 with the competitor. I really can''t judge the product by that obviously it depends on which tunnel the traps were set in. I will update my review as I keep setting traps throughout the week, but for now the competitor is in the lead.

I never thought I would learn how to trap gophers. After watching several youtube videos I have decided to buy Victor Easy Set Gopher trap. This way I can follow the video better since it looks like the person was using the same product. Nope, I don''t get this product for free. It was easy to "engage" the trap and I was careful not to get trapped myself! My first attempt was not successful. I did not catch anything, so I have decided to go with another way to trap the gopher, that is find a junction which means dig a bigger hole and find the tunnels. Surprisingly, where the gopher surfaced is not the right place to dig. If you find slightly disturbed earth that lead to a mound, that''s where you should dig. I hosed the area down to find the tunnel, it seems that the bigger the tunnel the bigger the gopher! At first I thought the trap was too big, I have to keep enlarging the hole to fit the trap in. The advantage of being a woman is I have a smaller hand, I stick my hand in the hole to find which way it goes (yup! I was terrified something will bit me!). Anyway, after finding the junction, I put one on each direction. Cover the holes with board/paper then threw dirt on top of it. The next day I found one dead gopher, rather small but I am happy, less plants to die. Score! Setting up another one today.

We were having a hard time catching a gopher in our backyard and the gopher effectively killed a number of our new trees by eating the roots off. This trap is what finally worked for us. First, you have to widen the hole a bit so the trap slides in. Second, you need to place the trap at the END of the tunneling complex so go to where the digs are freshest and on the edge of the burrowing area (because, in the main area, the gopher is far more likely to just shove dirt into the trap and block it). Third, use carrots. Seriously, the carrots are the key (especially if you live in a desert where there is not a lot to eat in the first place). Throw a few carrot pieces down the tunnel so they get used to the flavor and smell... then put some carrots on the trap. When we did this, we caught the massive gopher in our back yard. Now we can replant all the trees that gopher destroyed! (Hopefully the wild ground squirrels and jack rabbits won''t eat all the leaves off the saplings like last year! Maybe I need a solution for that too...)

After loosing five artichoke plants in our garden (grown from seed!) within 1-2 weeks, we needed an effective solution to our garden gopher problem. These gopher traps work once we learned how to use them properly. Tunnel flares don''t work. Surface traps (scissor) don''t work (their tunnels are too deep!). After much reading, we learned how to use these traps effectively. So grab a trap, a shovel, a narrow garden trowel and some rope (something to tie around the trap to pull it from a tunnel). When a fresh gopher mound appears or we find a surface feed hole in the garden, we dig a hole in the mound to find the tunnel(s). Note: Dig the sides perpendicular to the surface makes it easier to identify the tunnel(s) in the hole. Generally, tunnels are 1-2 feet below the surface. Use the garden trowel to clean out the tunnel entrance of any loose soil and ensure it is wide enough for the trap. Tie a string to the end of the trap (easier to pull it free), set the trap and place it into the tunnel (see picture) with the string hanging out. At this point, leave the tunnel OPEN. As I''ve read, gophers maintain entrances to their tunnels to avoid predator risk so they will be back to plug the hole. We''ve found that can take as short as hour, but we often set it and check the next morning. On occasion, a gopher has been able to plug the hole without triggering the trap. In this case, remove the trap and repeat the tunnel prep ensuring the entire trap is place inside the tunnel entrance. Typically, the second time is effective if the first wasn''t in an active tunnel. If you didn''t see any activity in the tunnel, check the other sides of your hole (may need to dig it wider) to make sure you didn''t overlook another tunnel entrance into that gopher mound. Once I''ve trapped the gopher, I leave the hole open (flag it to avoid injury if needed) for 1-2 days just to make sure there isn''t further activity (supposedly solitary but...) and then fill the hole back in.

I love these - they’re much easier to set and seem to have higher success rates than the other brands of this style gopher trap. The weather-resistant material is a huge plus as well - rusty traps don’t trip as easily. I’ve caught 5 gophers this spring with a combination of these and the Black Hole. It doesn’t kill them as quickly as the BH but is much easier to put into the tunnel because of it’s smaller size. However, I do recommend using a YouTube video to learn how to set it - the instructions in the package made zero sense to me. It’s easy to do but it’s better to watch someone do it to learn.

I have had some luck with these Victor traps, but I find it difficult to set a sensitive trigger on these. I''m not digging up the main gopher tunnels and setting two traps, like some recommend. Instead, I find a fresh mound, clear out the dirt in the lateral tunnel at the surface, widen the hole a bit, and set one trap down into the opening of this hole. The gopher''s response is to push more dirt up into the lateral tunnel to close it off at the surface.

Ideally, the gopher will trigger the trap as dirt is being pushed up through the hole, and be captured (and killed) by the trap. Because the trigger on the Victor trap is not sensitive enough, these traps often get covered up with dirt without tripping the trigger mechanism. Even so, I usually get the gopher after re-setting the trap (and re-clearing the hole) one or two times.

I have a DK-1 gopher trap with a trigger design that is slightly better than the Victor trap, but my best luck has been with the stainless steel "Gophenator" traps. Those have the best trigger design of the three different traps that I have used. It''s relatively easy to set a "hair trigger" on the Gophenator trap, which is helpful when setting the trap just inside the surface hole of the lateral tunnel. That should make it harder for the gopher to push dirt out without triggering the trap.

I started with one DK-1 trap three weeks ago and got 4 "Gophenator" traps a few days later. I bought 2 of the Victor traps a week ago and then 6 more "Gophenator" traps. I''m still learning, but I''ve caught 99 gophers so far on about 15 to 20 acres of pasture. I may be tempted to "retire" the Victor traps and the DK-1 trap, but I do catch some gophers with them. The DK-1 caught 4 gophers on the first day that it was used (beginner''s luck), but has been less effective since then. We''ve had several rains since then, and it seems that the gophers don''t move as much when the ground is saturated.

There is a nother style build by Victor that is the "Black Hole" model, this I have been 4 for 5 with bait, and the one failure I believe was my fault. The trap is easy to set, once you have watched a video or seen one set before. The trigger isn''t all that sensitive, which is why I think I am having poor success with them, I may try to file it down or polish it or something to make it easier to trip when set.
